Ten years after his breakthrough indie hit Garden State made him more than just “J.D. from Scrubs”, Zach Braff is back with another emotional look at family, faith and generational angst in Wish I Was Here. The partially Kickstarter-funded film, written by Braff and his brother Adam, follows Aiden Bloom, a 35-year-old struggling actor father of two, whose wife (Kate Hudson) is forced to hold down a less-than-ideal desk job just to keep the family afloat. Through circumstance (namely Aiden’s father Gabe – played here by the legendary Mandy Patinkin), Aiden finds himself at a crossroads, re-examining his life, his family, and his faith.
We got a chance to talk to Braff and his talented (and uber-charming) cast – including Josh Gad and Joey King — about the film this past May at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. See what they had to say about love, family dysfunction, and the best advice they’ve ever received in the videos below. Keep an eye out for Zach’s Garden State shout-out and more importantly, Hudson’s fabulous phone faux pas:
Wish I Was Here opens in limited release July 18. Read up on the film’s excellent soundtrack now!
